Stockfeed lime, also known as agricultural lime or calcitic lime, is a calcium-rich mineral supplement specifically formulated for animal feed. It helps regulate livestock health and productivity.

Description:

  • Fine, odorless powder, usually white or grayish-white in color.
  • May come in granular forms for easier handling.
  • Sold in bags or bulk depending on the supplier and quantity.

Uses:

  • Provides a supplemental source of calcium and magnesium for cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and poultry.
  • Helps regulate blood calcium levels, crucial for bone development, muscle function, and nerve transmission in animals.
  • Can improve feed digestibility and utilization.
  • May benefit eggshell quality in poultry.
  • In some cases, used for its acid-neutralizing properties to improve rumen (fermentation chamber in the stomach) health in cattle.

Chemical Composition:

  • Primarily calcium carbonate (CaCO3) – makes up the majority (usually over 90%)
  • May contain small amounts of other minerals depending on the source rock, such as:
    • Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3)
    • Calcium oxide (CaO) – limited amounts, as high levels can be harmful to animals.
    • Trace elements like iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) – beneficial in small quantities.

Physical Properties:

  • Density: Around 2500-2900 kg/m3 (depending on particle size and packing)
  • Solubility in Water: Low solubility in pure water. However, becomes more soluble in acidic environments like the animal’s stomach.
  • Melting Point: 849°C (1560°F) for calcium carbonate
  • Boiling Point: Decomposes before reaching boiling point

Safety Information:

  • Generally safe for animals when used according to recommended feeding guidelines.
  • Excessive intake can lead to mineral imbalances and health problems.
  • Inhaling lime dust can irritate the respiratory system.
  • Wear a dust mask when handling bulk stockfeed lime.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Additional Information:

  • The recommended amount of stockfeed lime varies depending on the animal species, age, diet, and purpose. Always consult with a veterinarian or animal nutritionist for specific feeding recommendations.
  • Store stockfeed lime in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture absorption and caking.
  • Different grades of stockfeed lime may be available, such as high-calcium or dolomitic lime (containing magnesium). Choose the appropriate grade based on your animals’ needs.
